How to Get More Google Reviews: 12 Proven Ways
How to get more Google reviews without breaking Google's rules: 12 practical ways, from review links and QR codes to NFC review cards.

More Google reviews help you show up in local search and Google Maps, and they're often the first thing a new customer reads before visiting. The good news: most happy customers will leave a review if you ask at the right moment and make it quick.
This guide covers how to get more Google reviews in ways that work and stay within Google's rules.
First, what Google doesn't allow
Before anything else, know the rules. Google's review policies don't allow:
- Paying or rewarding people for reviews. No discounts, gifts, free items or prize draws in return for a review.
- Review gating. Asking only happy customers for reviews, or steering unhappy ones away from Google.
- Fake reviews. Reviewing your own business, or asking staff, family or anyone you pay to do it.
Breaking these rules can get reviews removed or your profile restricted. Everything below works without them.
1. Ask every customer
The simplest way to get more Google reviews is to ask. Many customers who had a good experience never think of leaving a review until someone asks. Make asking part of how you finish every visit, order or appointment, and ask everyone, not just the customers who look happy.
2. Ask at the right moment
Timing matters more than wording. Ask when the customer is happiest:
- Restaurants and cafés: when you bring the bill, or when someone compliments the food.
- Salons and spas: right after the customer sees the finished result.
- Clinics: at checkout, after a good appointment.
- Auto workshops: when you hand back the keys and explain the work.
- Shops: at the till, or in the delivery message.
3. Make it take seconds
Every extra step loses reviews. If a customer has to search for your business, find the right listing and look for the review button, many will give up. Give them a direct link that opens your review form. Our guide on how to create a Google review link shows you how.
4. Put a QR code where customers wait
A QR code turns your review link into something customers can scan with their phone camera. Good places for one:
- table cards and menus
- the counter or checkout
- reception desks and waiting areas
- receipts, invoices and delivery bags
Keep the code at least 2–3 cm wide and add a short line like "Scan to review us on Google" so people know what it's for.
5. Use NFC review cards for a one-tap review
An NFC review card opens your review page when a customer holds their phone near it. There's nothing to scan or type, which makes it the fastest option at a counter or table. Most recent iPhones and Android phones read NFC cards without an app. On Android, NFC needs to be switched on, so cards should also carry a QR code as a backup.
GatherRatings NFC review cards come programmed with your review page, tested and locked so nobody can redirect them.
6. Send the link after the visit
For appointments, deliveries and services, the best time to ask is often a few hours after. Send a short message by WhatsApp, SMS or email with your review link. Keep it personal and short:
Hi Sara, thanks for visiting us today! If you have a minute, we'd love a Google review: [link]. It really helps a small business like ours.
7. Train your team to ask
Your staff talk to customers every day. Give them one simple line to use, show them where the cards or signs are, and remind them to ask everyone. Don't reward staff for the number or rating of reviews: Google's rules don't allow review targets.
8. Reply to every review
Replying shows customers that you read reviews, which makes others more likely to leave one. Thank people for positive reviews by name. For negative reviews, reply calmly, apologise for the experience, and offer to make it right offline. A good reply to a bad review can win trust from everyone who reads it.
9. Learn from unhappy customers privately too
Some customers would rather tell you directly what went wrong. Offering a private way to give feedback, alongside the Google link, helps you fix problems quickly. The key is that every customer can still leave a Google review if they want to.
10. Make your Google Business Profile complete
People are more likely to review a business that looks active and trustworthy on Google. Check that your name, hours, phone number, categories, services and photos are complete and up to date. If your profile needs work, see our Google Business Profile setup and optimization service.
11. Give each location its own link
If you have more than one branch, each location needs its own Google Business Profile and its own review link. Otherwise reviews land on the wrong branch, or customers can't find the right one. Use a separate QR code and card for each location.
12. Track what works
Count where reviews come from. If table cards bring in more reviews than receipts, put more effort into tables. GatherRatings tags each card, table or printout, so you can see which ones customers actually use.
